Roobarb, sister company to Tamarisk, designs furniture with a quirkier and brighter feel. I had tocreate a 12 page brochure to focus on their new range. Photographed in a converted warehouse, the brochure needed an edgy and urban look and feel. I designed this brochure whilst at The Set Up Design.

Mark Design work placement

I recently worked at Mark Design on a two week work placement. Mark Design is a small graphic and web design agency in Brighton and they produce such beautiful work. I worked on a variety of projects including some branding, web design, print and I even got to design some football kits for a college! As a big football fan, designing the football kits was definitely my favourite part of the placement. It was a great experience working there for the two weeks and a big thanks to Gus and Andy for making my time there very enjoyable!

Here is one of my first projects from when I was working at Three Sixty Group. The brief was to design a new brand identity and a marketing brochure for Columbia House in Worthing. The aim was to give it a more modern feel and help attract future companies to want to use the available office spaces within the building.

After a little bit of a rest after all the excitement of graduation and winning my yellow pencil, I have managed to get myself a job in graphic design! I will be working for Three Sixty Group in Hove who are a small design and marketing agency that specialise in the commercial property sector and allied industries. My role here will involve various tasks such as design brochures and signage, branding design, sending work to print, answering the phone, interacting with clients, producing estimates and various other administrative tasks. D&AD Homebase ‘Grow Your Own’

Here is my 2009 D&AD entry which I won a first prize student yellow pencil for. The brief was set by Homebase to design packaging and point of sale for for their new ‘grow your own’ fruit and vegetable range. I wanted to try and create something a little bit different and and eye catching. The main concept was the idea of green fingers.

Get Him Get Her

‘Get Him Ger Her’ is a humorous dating book that probably gives me reasons why not to date than date but despite the sarcastic humour involved the idea is to give males and females some tips in the art of dating. I would say that most people would find this book to be funny and enjoy reading it whether you wanted to date or not.

The Warren

This brochure for ‘The Warren’ in Worthing is probably my favourite brochure from my time at Three Sixty Group. It has a colour eye catching brand and was one of the more ‘better’ looking buildings that I had to work with.

‘Mmm… London I love You’

Inspired by the book ‘Mmm… Skyscraper I love you’, I decided to make similar book for London with a twist. ‘Mmm… London I love you’ focuses on the negatives of London in a very sarcastic tone. Personally I love London but thought it would be fun to look at London from some other peoples point of views as London is definitely not every ones cup of tea.

During my time at The Set Up Design, we produced a lot of work for Dunlop. Here is a concept that I came up with for some web banners that they wanted for various tyres to go on various websites all over the globe. Various landscapes were created but this one is my favourite.

On Thursday 2nd July 2009, I experienced my most proudest moment of my short design career so far. I was awarded a D&AD first prize yellow pencil for my packaging entry in to the competition. Words can’t describe how thrilled I am about this. It means so much to me and makes all that hard work that I put in to the brief seem worth it. It was an amazing moment to achieve this award and I’ll never forget it.

After a roller coaster three years studying at University for the Creative Arts in Epsom, it all came to an end in Guildford when I graduated with a first class BA (Hons) degree in graphic design. Although it is all over I will be able to take some special memories away with me, and I have also made a lot of great friends. The three years went very quick and although it is very sad to all be over, my graphic design adventure has only just begun!

Persil ‘Just Add’

Here is a group project that I and four others worked on that was set for us by Wieden + Kennedy. The aim was to help promote Persil for students which is not easy as Persil is amongst the most expensive of washing powders. The idea behind this campaign is that all you need to do is add the washing powder to some water and the rest is easy. I’m not sure if I would use a puddle to wash my own clothes in future but it was quite fun being the guinea pig for this advert (watch the video).

Open University

Here is an advertising brief for the Open University. The aim is to encourage people that want to better themselves that it is never too late to get a degree, and with the Open University you can even study from home. Being someone that went to University a bit later than most, this brief appealed to me greatly as I could relate to it from my own personal experiences.

RSA brief to design a set of stamps to encourage a people to start collecting stamps. The idea behind my Olympic stamps idea is that by having a different hoop on each stamp will hopefully make people to want to collect the entire set.

It is a very exiting time at the moment what with graduation and my D&AD awards night just around the corner. First up though it was the D&AD New Blood exhibition to go to. Only a handful of UCA students were chosen to represent the University for this exhibition and I was honoured to be one of the lucky ones chosen. It was great to talk to professional designers and to walk around and seeing some of the amazing talent around the country. It was certainly enough to inspire me and to also realise that competition in this industry is fierce so I should never rest on my laurels and also look to improving as a design all the time, and that is what I plan to do.

This is just the beginning!

I didn’t quite get the dream job I had hoped for after our end of year show but it was certainly an exciting experience getting to see people in the design industry and was just nice to be able to display my portfolio after three years of hard work. I may not have got a job out of it and university might just about be over but it is just the start of a long adventure in to the world of graphic design. I hope it is anyway!

’24 Hours in London’

’24 Hours in London’ is a book I made that has no start or end to the book. The idea behind it is to show that you can never really get bored in London as there is so much to do. The book is written in cocky rhyming slang to help add a bit of humour to the book. There are 24 spreads in this book (one spread for every hour of the day) and each one focuses on different aspects of what London has to offer.

D&AD Yellow Pencil Nomination!

I have been fortunate enough to be nominated for a D&AD Student Yellow Pencil Award for the packaging brief that was set by Homebase. I am very proud of this achievement even if nothing else comes of it and I am very excited about the awards evening that will be taking place at the start of July. Fingers crossed!

I got my first taste of the real world of graphic design when I got a chance to do a two week work placement at Mother and Baby Magazine in Central London. It was a great experience and gave me a good feel as to what working in magazine design would be like and it is definitely an area that interests me greatly. The day that London stood still

I’m not one to not turn up to work on my first day but unfortunately the crazy weather conditions put most of London to a halt. I was meant to be starting a two week work placement at Mother & Baby Magazine, but with no trains or buses running it was practically impossible to get there. I can’t complain though. We rarely get snow in this country so you might as well enjoy it whilst it is here. The novelty soon wore off though when I could no longer feel my fingers!

D&AD Development

I’m a strong believer that the more ideas that you have for a design brief then the better the final outcome will be. That is my motto for the D&AD packaging brief this year. Hopefully if I can come up with lots of strong ideas there will be a very special idea amongst that lot that can give me a chance of impressing the D&AD judges! Below is a selection of some of my early ideas for this brief. I certainly feel that I have a few ideas to work with.

Here is a video that me and four others at university have been working on to help promote Persil. The brief was set my Wieden + Kennedy and the experience of visiting their London office once a week for a meeting has been amazing! In this video I’m that mug that decided to get drenched. It was fun to do though and would highly recommend people washing their clothes in this way!

Columbia House

Columbia House is one of the largest and most prominent office site in Worthing (West Sussex). The building which dates back to the 70′s still had the original facade and the marketing of available space was limited to small agent-style boards. My brief was to bring the building, and the marketing of available space, up to date – with plenty of impact. A brand was created that was modern, yet still sympathetic to the building. On the front of the building a new fascia was installed along the 18 meter long canopy, along with a large-format sign at the top of the building. To attract potential tenants, the marketing of the site involved six by eight foot marketing boards, a brochure and a website.
